Robotic Inguinal Hernia
What is an Inguinal Hernia?
An inguinal hernia occurs when tissue, usually part of the intestine, pushes through a weak spot in the groin area. This creates a bulge that you may notice when standing, coughing, or straining. Inguinal hernias are very common and typically require surgery to fix.
What is Robotic Inguinal Hernia Repair?
Robotic inguinal hernia repair is a minimally invasive surgical technique that uses a robotic surgical system to fix your hernia. Instead of making one large incision (cut) like traditional “open” surgery, your surgeon makes several small incisions, usually about the size of a pencil eraser.
During the procedure, your surgeon sits at a special console and controls robotic instruments that have tiny “wrists” at the end, allowing very precise movements. The robot provides a high-definition, 3D view of the surgical area, helping the surgeon see clearly and work with great accuracy. The surgeon is in complete control at all times—the robot doesn’t operate on its own.
How Does It Work?
The most common robotic approach is called rTAPP (robotic transabdominal preperitoneal repair). Here’s what happens:
- You’ll receive general anesthesia, so you’ll be asleep during the procedure
- The surgeon makes 3-4 small incisions in your abdomen
- Using the robotic instruments, the surgeon accesses the hernia from inside your abdomen
- The hernia is pushed back into place
- A piece of surgical mesh is placed over the weak area to reinforce it and prevent the hernia from coming back
- The mesh is typically sutured (sewn) in place rather than tacked
- The small incisions are closed
The entire procedure typically takes 50-60 minutes for a single hernia, or about 90-100 minutes if you have hernias on both sides.
What Are the Benefits?
Research shows that robotic inguinal hernia repair offers several advantages:
- Less pain after surgery: Many patients need fewer pain medications compared to open surgery
- Faster recovery: Most patients return to normal daily activities within 3-5 days
- Smaller scars: The small incisions typically heal with minimal scarring
- Same-day discharge: Many patients go home the same day as surgery
- Low recurrence rates: The hernia is unlikely to come back, with rates comparable to or better than other techniques
- Good for complex cases: The robotic approach works well even for recurrent hernias or hernias on both sides
What Should I Expect for Recovery?
Immediately After Surgery:
- Most patients are discharged the same day or the next morning
- You can usually eat a regular diet right away
- Pain is typically minimal and well-controlled with medication
First Week:
- You can resume daily activities and light work as soon as you feel comfortable, usually within 3-5 days
- Follow your pain level as a guide—if something hurts, don’t do it yet
- Avoid heavy lifting initially
Returning to Full Activity:
- Most surgeons recommend waiting about 2 weeks before resuming sports or strenuous exercise
- Heavy lifting (over 20-30 pounds) is typically restricted for 2-4 weeks.
- Your surgeon will give you specific instructions based on your individual situation
Important: There is no evidence that returning to normal activity too quickly increases your risk of the hernia coming back, as long as you listen to your body and avoid activities that cause pain.[9]
Is It Safe?
Yes, robotic inguinal hernia repair is safe and effective.Studies involving thousands of patients show that complication rates are very low and comparable to traditional laparoscopic and open techniques.[14-15] The most common minor complications are small fluid collections (seromas) that typically resolve on their own.[14]
